Balsamic Whiskey Steak

May 28, 2017 by Leave a Comment

The Balsamic whiskey steak is a delicious entrée that would satisfy both the whiskey and meat lover.  I pulled the recipe from Pinterest; however, I believe it originated from Valerie’s Kitchen website http://bit.ly/2qA6ASA.  I adapted the recipe slightly based on the cut of beef that I used.

The whiskey marinade definitely enhanced the flavor of the steak and created a “happy, happy” sensation upon the first bite.  Once you experience the first bite, you will be curious to try other cuts of steak and brands of bourbon to see if the flavor changes.  The recipe indicates 2 to 4 hours of marinade time and I would agree not to go beyond four hours.

Marinade ingredients
Blended marinade
Pan grilled beef tenderloin

The longer time would probably infuse more of the whiskey flavor than a balanced steak-whiskey flavor.  I used Makers Mark Bourbon whiskey because the primary grain used is wheat and it may give an earthy characteristic.  This recipe would feed approximately 4 people.

The Emerald of the Isle Cocktail

April 1, 2017 by Leave a Comment

Another not-too common Irish cocktail is The Emerald.  The Emerald is an Irish whiskey cocktail that looks sophisticated when it is poured into a martini glass instead of a regular tumbler.

The Emerald is similar to a Manhattan; however, it is made with Irish whiskey instead of bourbon and it uses orange bitters rather than Angostura bitters.  So even though St. Patrick’s Day is over you can still partake of the Emerald and have all the luck of the Irish!

Irish-English Car Bomb Cupcakes

March 17, 2017 by Leave a Comment

The Irish-English Car Bomb Cupcakes was just a thought when I came numerous recipes for Irish Car Bomb cupcakes on Pinterest.  The more I thought about giving the recipe a go the more the little recipe devil or the Irish Car Bombs said “just do it”.  I did not have Guinness stout so I had to use what I had on hand which was Young’s Double Chocolate Stout.  Therefore, the name changed to Irish-English Car Bomb Cupcakes.

When you are prepping your ingredients for these decadent cupcakes, do not partake of Irish Car Bombs.  However, if you do have a couple of drinks make sure that you are wearing a cooking apron – it will get messy!  This recipe will make 24 cupcakes. The three preparation sections in the mixing process are as follows:

The cupcake mix

1. Mixing butter and sugar ingredients
2. Adding and blending vanilla extract
3. Blending stout and flour mixture #1

4. Blending stout and flour mixture #2
5. Spooning batter into baking cups #1
6. Baked cupcakes

The Bailey’s ganache

7. Blending the Irish Cream Ganache
8. Sections filled with ganache

Lynchburg Lemonade

August 29, 2016 by Leave a Comment

The Lynchburg Lemonade is a smooth and refreshing “adult only” whiskey cocktail that is made with Jack Daniel’s Tennessee Sour Mash whiskey.  If you don’t have Jack Daniel’s whiskey on-hand then you can use any Tennessee whiskey.  The Lynchburg Lemonade name is derived from Jack Daniel’s hometown of Lynchburg, Tennessee.  If you are looking for mom and pop’s lemonade recipe then you won’t find it in this cocktail.  The lemonade flavor is mixed in with the whiskey and you will definitely notice the whiskey kick in this concoction.

Even if you are not a fan of whiskey, you should give it a shot just to quench your curiosity.  My wife is not a fan of any whiskies but she did try this cocktail and stated that it was “not bad”.  The lemon-lime soda, triple sec and sour mix helped to smooth out the whiskey flavor and made the drink more palatable for her taste buds.  I wasn’t a fan of Jack Daniel’s until I made the Lynchburg Lemonade and then I became pleasantly surprised and had to try another one of them!  I used Powell and Mahoney Lemon Sour mix for a more natural flavor.

If you are looking for a summer drink with a little whiskey kick I would recommend giving the Lynchburg Lemonade a try – they may turn into an addiction!  By the way, this is a slight variation from the one in Fred Thompson’s book “Bourbon:  50 Rousing Recipes for a Classic American Spirit.”

How did the Lynchburg Lemonade go down?  If you tried a different variation please let all of us know your version.

Dirty Bastard Whiskey Cocktail

July 30, 2016 by Leave a Comment

The Dirty Bastard Whiskey cocktail is a refreshing thirst-quencher with a taste of Ireland in the making since Jameson whiskey is one of the ingredients.    The Jameson whiskey and the ginger beer provide the strength and fierceness of the cocktail.

The Hollinger Manhattan Project

June 18, 2016 by Leave a Comment

The Hollinger Manhattan Project is another awesome cocktail I came across while reviewing Chad Berkey and Jeremy LeBlanc’s book “The North American Whiskey Guide from Behind the Bar”.  This is a fantastic book to add to your cocktail book collection or even have behind the home bar during parties.  You can experiment with drinks as written in the book or you change up the ingredients to see what develops.  I slightly modified The Hollinger Manhattan Project by substituting Rittenhouse 100 Rye Whiskey with Bulleit 95 Small Batch Rye Whiskey.

The Bulleit Rye Whiskey had that peppery bite that is common for Rye whiskies.  Our review on the Bulleit 95 Rye whiskey can be viewed at https://loversofwhisky.com/bulleit-95-rye-whiskey/.  As far as the garnish goes for your cocktail, you can substitute the Luxardo Maraschino cherry with a regular Maraschino cherry.  The Luxardo cherries are sweeter than a regular Maraschino cherry.  And, without further ado, here is the Hollinger Manhattan Project.

How did the cocktail taste or are you too busy making yourself another one?

The Sag Harbor Sunrise Cocktail

June 6, 2016 by Leave a Comment

The Sag Harbor Sunrise cocktail is a refreshing drink made with Brenne French Single Malt whisky.  Brenne provides a floral-citrusy ambiance which creates a visual atmosphere of being at a coastal retreat surrounded crisp, clear ocean waters and luscious, white sands. It has a very aromatic aroma which helps with our vision of tropical surroundings.  Brenne whiskey is matured in barrels previously used for cognac and the smooth flavors of the cognac are imparted into the whisky.

Brenne French whisky has a slight nutty scent similar to almond, crisp apples, vanilla, marzipan, and some other fruity aroma like apricots.  The taste of scented spring-time flowers that have been brushed with cloves, orange peels, and a tropical spiciness are evident within the whisky.  The spiciness is detectable at the start but eventually dissipates.  The Sag Harbor Sunrise cocktail originates from the Brenne website.

The Green Eye Bourbon Cocktail

May 18, 2016 by Leave a Comment

The Green Eye Bourbon Cocktail was modified from Fred Thompson’s The Bourbon “Orange Thing” cocktail.  The green color of the cocktail is due to the green crème de menthe used rather than the clear crème de menthe as per the original recipe in the book “Bourbon: 50 Rousing Recipes for a Classic American Spirit”.  The orange and vanilla flavors provide a citrusy but smooth caress to your taste buds.  The flavor conjures up thoughts of a warm, cheerful spring day where you absorb the glow of the sun i.e. your body is just so relaxed that you cannot move.

I suggest you multiply the measurements of the ingredients and make a punch bowl size that you can share with your friends at a festive gathering.  If you substitute the bourbon with Irish whiskey you have a Saint Patrick’s Day cocktail to enjoy.

Depending on your budget, I would suggest making the cocktail using top-shelf ingredients so that you can experience the richness of the drink.  I enjoyed myself using ingredients from different price-points.  Here are the ingredients and some substitutions.

How do your taste-buds feel after the first sip?

The Manhattan Cocktail of New York City

February 19, 2016 by Leave a Comment

The Manhattan Cocktail of New York City is just one of several whiskey cocktails to experience.  When you think of a whiskey cocktail that has stood the test of time and social gatherings, then the Manhattan springs to mind.  Its origin has been a fascination to lovers of whiskey and social gatherings for many years.

While I was perusing my copy of Dave Broom’s book, Whisky: The Manual, I discovered that “According to legend it was “invented” in 1874 at the Manhattan Club in New York City for Jennie Jerome (Winston Churchill’s mother).”  I believe researchers are probably still trying to determine the origins of the Manhattan and whether or not the cocktail what named after Ms. Jerome.

The book offer many tidbits on how and when the Manhattan originated.  Lovers of Whisk(e)y the world over are probably thankful to add the Manhattan as another cocktail to quench their thirst.

The Manhattan is a great cocktail to have when you and your friends get together on the weekends.  In fact why wait till you friends come to enjoy a Manhattan when you can mix one now.  Depended upon where the whiskey is distilled, many bartenders or mixologists will have their different versions of a Manhattan which are derived from the different types of whiskies.

I suggest you pick you a copy of Dave Broom’s book, Whisky: The Manual and look up the Manhattan as well as some of the other Manhattan variations.  This is not the only book available which provide recipes for making a Manhattan whiskey cocktails.  Many single cocktail recipes can be either Googled or searched via the Internet.

Please share your comments here on our website www.loversofwhisky.com.  You can check out our Facebook Fan page at www.facebook.com/loversofwhisky for other information on the Manhattan or just peruse our page.  We would appreciate any suggests or areas of research on whiskies, restaurants, cigars or anything that complements whiskies.

What was your take on the Manhattan cocktail?  Will you partake of another one or will you give it a pass?  What is your thoughts?

American Honey Peach Iced Tea

February 17, 2016 by Leave a Comment

The American Honey Peach Iced Tea is a good to have any time of the day or season type of cocktail.  It’s made using Wild Turkey American Honey liqueur which is a blend of honey and bourbon whiskey.

The recipe has been adapted from a Pinterest recipe.

How refreshing was the American Honey Peach Iced Tea and are you ready for another one?
