Smokey Joe Scotch Whiskey is one of several whiskies distilled on the Islay island of Scotland’s southwest coast. The Islay Island is known for its peat bogs. Over a period of time the vegetation on the island goes through decomposition stages involving water and some carbonizing chemical reactions. The vegetation breaks down over time and peat bogs are created.
The peat is dug up and laid on the ground to dry; once dried the peat is burned on a kiln fire. The smoke created during the peat burning process is instilled into the grains located above the kiln fire and the smoke imparts the smoky and peaty flavor within the grain’s husk. This peaty smoke is one of several flavors used to create the Smokey Joe Islay Malt Scotch Whiskey.
The Smokey Joe Scotch Whiskey is a blended whiskey composed of unknown Islay whiskies. The tasting notes on the bottle states the following;
Colour: Gold (I say the color is smoked amber.)
Nose: Engaging smoke mixed with refined marine hints and citrus notes.
Palate/Taste: Exquisite balance of smoke and peppery spice. (I’ll say the smoke, peppery bite and peat are a marriage made in whiskey heaven.)
Finish: Lingering spice and peat (I’ll say the spice, peat and smoke stay with your taste buds for a short time before the taste degrades.)
